Oil Painting of Martin Luther - Painting - 16th c
Born Martin Luder on 10th November, 1483, Luther followed a career as an academic and priest. The former saw him as Professor of Theology at the newly established University of Wittenberg, established in 1507 with 179 students. His ecclesiastical career saw him enter an Augustinian monastery at the age of 22, he claimed to escape the torment of an abusive childhood, and then become priest of the City church of Wittenburg. This role saw him witness the extreme act of indulgence sales, whereby parishioners could buy salvation and after reading a manual on the sale of indulgences, wrote his 95 Thesis. On 31st October 1517, Luther nailed these as a letter addressed to his church superiors to the door of the City church, addressing the issue of indulgencies. Within a short period, copies of the 95 Theses had been printed and spread throughout Europe. Luther was excommunicated in June 1520, publicly burning the papal bill and other books of the established church. He was advised to lead a more secluded life by friends, and set about writing three books on his theological ideas. In less than eleven weeks, Luther also translated the bible in to German.Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553), named after his birthplace of Kronach in southern Germany, was an important painter, engraver and book illustrator. He travelled widely throughout the German states as an itinerant painter. Later in his life he became a personal friend of Martin Luther, and many of his images promoted the Protestant cause. Cranach was a witness to Luther’s marriage to Katherine von Bora in 1525, and both men stood as god-fathers to children of the other. Both Cranach’s sons, Hans, and Lucas the Younger, continued his workshop and his work is thus hard to identity. A second portrait by Cranach of Luther is held at the Warburg-Stiftun institute, Eisenach. While similarities are evident, the Bunratty portrait is of a younger man, with titian-red hair, hazel eyes, prominent cheekbones, and a less fleshier appearance than of the older portrait.

An oil painting on panel of Edward VI - Painting - 16th c
Edward VI became king at the age of nine in 1547 following the death of his father Henry VIII. A regency was created, dominated by his uncles Thomas and Edward Seymour, brothers to the boy king’s mother, Jane. Although he was an intelligent boy, fluent in Greek and Latin and a dedicated diary writer, he was not physically robust..During Edward’s reign, the Church of England became more Protestant. Edward himself was a fierce supporter of the new religion. The Book of Common Prayer was introduced in 1549 and certain aspects of Roman Catholic practice, such as statuary and stained glass were eradicated. To ensure the Protestant succession, one of Henry VIII’s nieces, Lady Jane Grey, became an object of hope. However, upon Edward’s early death from tuberculosis in 1553, Edward’s older sister the staunch Catholic Mary Tudor, usurped Lady Jane Grey from the throne after only a few days. The fine portrait of Edward VI at Bunratty shows him in an interior setting before an ornate and luxurious curtain. This resembles a portrait in the Royal Collection of Elizabeth II by an unknown artist, who shows the king in the same interior setting, with the stone to the left forming a window through which some of London can be seen.
