Triptych depicting St. Barbara and the angel Gabriel - Painting - 15th c
A triptych comprises of three panels with images on both sides of the two outer pieces which are hinged to open and close over the wider central panel. Altar pieces were often of this form and were a necessary element of the holy calendar. As events passed, different panels could be opened up, displaying the image behind. This triptych panel is highly decorated with carved trefoils and diamond shapes inset with contrasting coloured insets. The subject as a whole suits symmetry, and is therefore popular with triptychs using pairs of figures. This piece is only one of the three panels, hinges surviving on the right of St Barbara. St Barbara is actually the exterior, with a painted image of the Angel Gabriel on the inside. The carved gothic arches beneath which St Barbara is shown, frames her halo, and are intricately carved with filigree.St Barbara is depicted holding the chalice and wafer. No historical base exists for her existence, and what is known comes from the Golden Legend. Her father, a heathen nobleman named Dioscurus, incarcerated her in a tower to protect her from suitors. Upon her father discovering she had been baptised, she escaped and fled. A shepherd betrayed her hiding place and her father handed her over to the Roman authorities, who tortured her horribly. She was condemned to be executed by her father’s sword, who took her into the mountains to carry out the act. Immediately after her death, her father was stuck by lightening and burst in to flames. Her attributes of the chalice and wafer are symbolic of the last sacrament. The Angel Gabriel, the messenger of God, foretold the birth of John the Baptist, and the Virgin Mary, and popularly believed to have been the angel who foretold the birth of Christ and his resurrection. Gabriel’s dominant role in Christian art is that of the angel of the annunciation, in which his attribute of the sceptre tipped with the fleur-de-lys is represented in early Renaissance art, which became the lily in later art.
