The Dormition of the Virgin Mary - Painting - 15th c
Representations of the death of the Virgin usually form a cycle of scenes in churches dedicated to her. In Northern art, the scene is usually set beneath a canopied bed in a domestic interior, as opposed to a couch or bier in the south and Italy. The Virgin is depicted before death, holding a candle. In accordance with the old custom of putting a candle in the hands of a dying person, its light symbolised Christian faith. The Apostles surround the deathbed, St John to the left in a brown cloak holds the palm given to him by the Virgin and which he is usually depicted. Christ, seen only in works up to the 15th century, appears with God and angels on the canopy above. Most widely depicted in the cycle of her life, she was not dead but only sleeping until her resurrection three days later. The Virgin’s death was predicted to her three days before by a visiting angel, who presented her with the palm of paradise she passed on to St John.

Martyrdom of St.Blaise - Painting - 15th c
Blaisé, as a humble, sweet and holy man, was elected Bishop of Sebaste. Under the persecution of Roman emperor Diocletian, Blasé sought refuge in the wild, where the animals and birds fed him, and spend time with him. The animals, and then later men, would come and be healed, but would never disturb him at prayer. Agricola, governor of Cappadocia, came to Sebaste to persecute Christians. His huntsmen went into the forests of Argeus to find wild animals for the arena games, and found many waiting outside Blaise's hermitage. Discovered in prayer, Blaise was arrested, and Agricola tried to get him to recant his faith. While in prison, Blaise ministered to and healed fellow prisoners, including saving a child who was choking on a fish bone. This led to the blessing of throats on Blaise's feast day. Thrown into a lake to drown, Blaise stood on the surface and invited his persecutors to walk out and prove the power of their gods; all sixty five men drowned. When he returned to land, he was martyred by being beaten, his flesh torn with wool combs, and then beheaded. This scene represents the moment of his death by beheading, while a wealthy nobleman in contemporary dress, stands looking on. Blasé is at prayer, his Bishop’s mitre on the ground beside him.
